Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Every patient that is considering getting their natural hair back through a permanent surgical
procedure technique should be aware of these SIX facts:
1. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is an older and outdated punch graft method
using smaller punches to get 1-hair bulbs out of the donor site. This method was abandoned years ago by most physicians due to the
unsightly scars it created in the donor area. This procedure would also leave a crater look where the bulbs were implanted that were
visible to the natural eye.
2. The procedure is done by doing punches that are shaped like a hollow needle that cut all the tissue
surrounding the bulb to be extracted. It unnecessarily cuts excessive tissue around the 1-hair bulb to release it from the donor site.
These punch needles come in all different sizes, but the standard FUE method uses a smaller size still causing the same scaring and
damaging results.
3. When the punch is inserted into the donor area to cut out a 1-hair bulb, it also permanently damages the
surrounding hair follicles by cutting them as well. This means they will die in a week or so after surgery from being damaged. So
you are damaging 5-7 bulbs or follicles to get a 1-hair bulb or follicle to be implanted. Considering that the patient only has so
many hairs/follicles available during their lifetime, it is best to protect the remaining hairs and donor area as much as possible
for future harvesting.
4. In the donor area where the bulbs or follicles are taken from, a hole is now left open until the blood forms
and creates a scab which causes a round scar. The surrounding bulbs that are dying around the opening now leave a larger round scar
five to seven times the original scar size of the single bulb or follicle. This leaves the back donor area looking thin and spot scars
all over the area that they were taken from.
5. Patients that have had this kind of older procedure sometimes need to have repair work
done in the donor area by cutting out the damaged and scarred area(s) by using the remaining hairs/follicular units between the scars
to transplant in the other damaged areas in order to make the back of the head look normal again.
6. Now the patient has lost
5 to 7 times more of their good genetically coded hairs/follicular units than was necessary.
